Fight Club - Chuck Palahniuk

This is how it is with insomnia. Everything is so far away, a copy of a copy of a copy. The insomnia distance of everything, you can't touch anything and nothing can touch you.

Very well said @bvm. I actually experienced the same sort of feelings and sensations when coming out of anaesthesia post-op. It was a very surreal experience - one that I hope not to experience again

That is something like what I remember from a hospitalization where I was on a bunch of different drugs and painkillers. Very nightmarish, except I was awake, not fully awake, but not asleep. The screenplay got that description of the state of awareness spot on to my experience then, only I would not describe it as imsomnia. When I visited a person at that hospital last year, in the same room, I remembered the experience, and realized not only were distances unreal during the experience, but also walls weren't there. It was like I could see the nurse's station through the wall, as if there were no seperate rooms, just a warehouse like floor with patients, beds, desks, tables and staff. So strange at the time and very uncomfortable.
