A Man Without A Country - Kurt Vonnegut

This quote was added by weesin
If you want to really hurt your parents, and you don't have the nerve to be gay, the least you can do is go into the arts. I'm not kidding. The arts are not a way to make a living. They are a very human way of making life more bearable. Practicing an art, no matter how well or badly, is a way to make your soul grow. Sing in the shower. Dance to the radio. Tell stories. Write a poem to a friend, even a lousy poem.

Being gay isn't a choice or a matter of having enough nerve. If "being" gay is just a way for you to make your parents mad, well maybe you're not really gay in the first place. Most parents want for their children to be happy, so going into the arts shouldn't be an issue for most parents if in fact doing so makes you happy. The person Kurt wants you to be is a miserable creature. Try to think for yourself and stop idolizing other miserable people.
