Those who do not exert the least amount of effort are unqualified to envy the talented. Those who cannot succeed are unable to because they cannot imagine the painstaking accumulation of hard work by those who do.

I haven't, kumagi, but I'll check it out. I've been meaning to read something by Gladwell for a while now anyway (to see for myself what all the fuss was about), so I suppose I might as well start there.

dcb87 have you ever read "Outliers"? It's fascinating how much blind luck plays a part in the stories of the ultra successful.

I didn't know you had to be "qualified" to envy someone/something. To add to the things listed by kumagai, a person's circumstances can also be key. Success is relatively easy when you are, say, born into a middle-class family, in a rich country, and with a modicum of talent and ambition. This quote is of course very stupid.

Nah. Those who succeed tend to overestimate the contribution of their hard work and underestimate the contribution of the natural talent, genetics, strength of character, etc. they possess. So they erroneously think anyone can do what they did through hard work alone.
