Actually, in my experience pride and skill aren't that closely correlated. The skilled are often extremely humble or doubtful of their own prowess, while the unskilled may have an unrealistic image of their own ability.

I think there is a truer correlation between pride and environment. If you are constantly praised for your skill, you will feel pride in it, regardless of how good you really are. If you are in a highly competitive environment, you are more likely to disregard your own skill in comparison to others.
