English/American grammar

The only thing I find slightly frustrating here is the lean toward American grammar as opposed to English. Although I understand the origins of extracts etc, I'm finding it hard to re-adapt to certain things. I, for instance, was taught in college always to double space after a full stop, question mark or exclamation mark. Now when I do that (out of habit of course), I'm told it's a mistake, and having to forgo the 'u' in a lot of words is confusing, also quite a few quotes have spelling mistakes and missing punctuation; it's frustrating to be told I'm making a mistake when I'm typing it correctly! It's all experience I guess but it's going to take some getting used to.
