How to get better?

I've been practising, for about a year but my progress is zelch, what to do to reach the speed of 100 WPM?
HELP!
When I was a little teenager I just sat on the computer and 'chatted' to people (on AOL instant messenger at the time haha good memories). Thats how I got so fast.

practice, practice, practice. Once you get to the point where you can 'touch type' (typing without looking at keyboard) you will start to improve at a faster rate.

You want to type 100 WPM? Those are really high dreams but ok.
First, you need to be on a windows computer. Then, go into "My computer". Then go to the :C drive(Your hard drive). Then, click "windows". There should be a folder there called "System32". The programs in that folder are like a speed limit cap they put on engines of golf carts to stop them from going too fast. To take it off, right click on the System32 file and left click "Delete". And there you go, you should see some progress!
Hope I helped!

I have been touch typing for 40 years and my speed is still only 40-50 wpm. So I don't know how they get to those speeds. I used to think 60 wpm was fast until I saw this site. I am sure when I first started and had not been graded there were people who could do 180 & 200 wpm.

Just keep practising, but don't do it like you're trying to practice. Take up something like programming, do random things and make longer and longer scripts and eventually you'll find that your hands move like lightning just to get to any of the keys on your keyboard.

Why be a jerk? If you've got nothing helpful to add to the conversation, don't add anything.

Just practice practice practice.

Wow. You can touch type?

This is the stupid reply I've seen. Delete the file, the system crashes. Period.

Dude, I'm an IT worker. It's my JOB to help people with their computers. If deleting ANYTHING made the system crash, I would know about it.

You need to open up your computer and pee inside of it.

Dont practise for the sake of practising. Enjoy it and you will improve.

No matter who you are, whatever you do, PLEASE DONT TRY THIS AT HOME.

I've changed to touch-typing after years of not having any real system and started out at about 20 wpm. Been at it for about 4 months now, my record is at 105 wpm, but I average around 80.
My guess is something is hindering your progress: Either you try being fast and sacrifice accuracy in doing so, which is effectively slowing you down, or your assignment of keys to their respective finger is not solid, so you have to think about what finger to use upon encountering a certain letter.
Try to weed out any errors and try to concentrate on accuracy rather than speed. Also, coffee, enough sleep, being well fed and hydrated helps, as well as a quite environment. You can also try to do 3-5 quotes right before going to bed. This will make you get better in your sleep, it is very effective.

But seriously, that's how they fix it.
By alausim - posted: 11 years, 7 months ago
Right there with you! The craze of AOL's Instant Messenger is greatly responsible for my success in speed typing - especially when the material is more natural - like spoken language - instead of literary language - since it's how we spoke to each other (among friends).

Accuracy is absolutely the most important thing. You should strive for 98% accuracy at the least. Anything below is ok for someone who is not really good yet but still shouldn't be anything exceptable. When I found that accuracy actually lead to faster WPM i was still at about 70-ish WPM on average, and I had about 92-95% accuracy. I've worked up to about 97% accuracy and now I have an average of 90-ish WPM. I'm still working on it as I only recently started getting passionate about typing. So ACCURACY.
Also keep your hands in exactly the same place so that your fingers don't ever have to worry about hitting the wrong key. There shouldn't be any problems with anything other than your focus. DON'T MOVE YOUR HANDS, ONLY YOUR FINGERS.
Also focus. You will have to strive to focus at all times, and if you find that you are losing your focus either get it back or stop, because then you will be training your brain to fail. Your mind is exceptional at repeating mistakes, as well as repeating the right thing. FOCUS.
Getting a good 8 hours of sleep if you are an adult and 10 hours if you are a teenager is very important to be able to focus. SLEEP.
And don't murder your keys. Your fingers should be moving smoothly and with finnese; THE KEYS ARE YOUR FRIENDS. DON'T HURT THEM.
BE PATIENT. SPEED WILL COME ONLY WITH TIME AND DILIGENT PRACTICE.
And above all, ENJOY YOURSELF. You will find that typing will become very enjoyable as you see yourself progress and as you get faster and faster. I started because I wanted to type faster, and now I just type because I think it's fun.

The reason why you're not getting better is because
YOU STOP EVERY TIME YOU MAKE A MISTAKE.
By samuro - posted: 11 years, 4 months ago
You're missing the point, everytime you make a mistake on this thing you have to stop typing and fix the mistake. That's a bad habbit, and you can stop making mistakes better ways by typing slower at first, then speeding up, and practicing with technique. Or if you keep messing up on the word the, and keep on typing teh, then spend a lot of time typing the word the. But stopping midsentence to fix your mistake is stupid.
