I do know where the keys are by heart, but when I type, I just can't not look at the keyboard... This is so annoying.

Stronger automatic filter on quote submission to correct for blatant misspellings or poor punctuation, and PLEASE less religious stuff...

love this site... really look forward in getting some practice typing because right now I am nowhere near where I should be to get an office job!

I like KeyHero, but I would like to know a little more about how the timing is calculated.
I would like to read the quote before I start typing. It seems that the time starts as soon as the quote is displayed. I think it should start from the first keystroke.
By jstar73 - posted: 12 years, 4 months ago

I have suggested this one via email, but maybe others may comment...
I would like to see the speed graph on the left-hand side a 'dynamic graph', where you could click on (or hover over) the different speeds and it would display within the quote where the speed was fast and slow depending on where about along the graph you selected.
By jstar73 - posted: 12 years, 4 months ago

Hey rsairu,
The quotations are created by/for the users.
I cannot see why you're complaining about religious stuff, if you have only submitted one [1] quote.
Submit some more quotes of the "stuff" you want to see and type.
If you don't like it; do something about it (or leave).

I would like to see the 'Top Players' not qualify to be a Top Player, unless they have completed about 10 games.
There are a heap of players who have only played one [1] game and have made it onto the leader board, but there are people who are playing everyday that cannot ever get up the ladder.
Yes; they are fast and accurate, but there are a bunch of them that haven't returned since they logged their one and only result. Are they cheating by using Dragon Naturally Speaking? I don't know - can that be done?

It would be nice to see a graph of my wpm over all of my games, rather than just a recent window, So I can see how I've progressed over longer periods of time.

As far as I think, in comparison to the typing speed here the actual speed will be ~5-10wpm higher, since one would already know what has to be typed rather than looking on screen for the next word. But no doubt it one of interesting ways to start learning with. Cheers

I am such a slow typer hints? plz help me..
By uuq114 - posted: 12 years, 3 months ago

I'm not the greatest typist, but my advice to improve typing speed would be to read as much and as often as possible. If you are unfamiliar with certain words (namely, how they are spelled) while you are typing, then it will drastically hinder your typing speed. Plus, reading has tons of other benefits as well. It keeps you sharp, improves your vocabulary and grammar, and generally makes you more smart.
By zekemckillip - posted: 12 years, 3 months ago

I think a great suggestion for this Typing Test site would be to allow you to rate a quote after you type it. Also if you could comment on it on the same screen as the Typing Test... I guess maybe that would be harder to program, but it would be more convenient.
By bookworm12k - posted: 12 years, 3 months ago

The question remains of whether accuracy or speed is the best quality of typing. There is no argument over the fact that both are immensely valuable to typing. But, when it comes to practical applications, which should one focus most on improving? What to employers look for? Which allows for the freest flow of thought? What are the costs of each to the other, and is it a fair enough exchange to warrant equal effort in part of them both?

:why: can't I not get above 50 wpm?!
By zephyr_crucible - posted: 12 years, 3 months ago

For quotes, I don't believe it's necessary for spelling to be perfect or even good. The random spelling, punctuation and/or grammar error offers challenge. It helps weed out the skilled from the rest.
By zephyr_crucible - posted: 12 years, 3 months ago

What office job are you going for and what's their AWPM requirement? What's your AWPM goal? When I was practicing I reached about 36 AWPM. However, since I've stopped using Mavis Beacon I've just been typing for everything I like (texting SMS through my email account, making notes about something I need to remember like video game notes, movie notes, song lyrics, etc.) and now I have a 42.

Just focus on 100% accuracy and NEVER look at your hands or keyboard, always go just slower than your fastest, and find a pace where your strokes are in a steady streaming pattern with no gaps or breaks in the sound of your keystrokes. Don't get impatient. The key is to be comfortable. If it FEELS too slow then you're doing it right.

You'll always feel like you're typing at the same speed. But, believe me when I say from experience, if you're not looking at a clock or counting words for practice, just typing, you'll get faster a lot more quickly typing something you enjoy.
By zephyr_crucible - posted: 12 years, 3 months ago

The key to timing keystrokes is not being familiar with what your typing. Being comfortable typing whatever is on the screen. Memorizing it would be a cheat because you're familiarizing yourself with it instead of reacting second nature. Otherwise people would practice what's in the quote elsewhere (like "Notepad") before starting the time thus the scores you would see would be inaccurate. This way everybody has the same amount of time and under the same conditions. No cheats.

Timing is calculated as words per minute which the average word includes 5 characters and a space. Or maybe it's just 5 characters including the space. I can't remember. That's your WPM.

Your Average Words Per Minute or AWPM = WPM * Accuracy% / 100. For this program anyway. Normally it's total number of words divided by number of minutes (usual tests are done in a set amount of time like 5 minutes for example) which gives you your WPM minus total number of errors which gives you your AWPM. This is the number that jobs look at for your typing speed.
By zephyr_crucible - posted: 12 years, 3 months ago

I agree. Also, there IS the esc button. LOL
By zephyr_crucible - posted: 12 years, 3 months ago

That would give way to cheating. The object is to have random and unfamiliar material to type so everyone is being challenged the same way. If you got to chose what you typed then you would be choosing something you're familiar with and your scores wouldn't reflect your typing skill in general.

It'd be like playing Tetris with the shapes always falling in the same order and always oriented the same way. There'd be no point after a while because there'd be no randomness to challenge you so you can improve your skills or to compare your skills against anyone else.
By zephyr_crucible - posted: 12 years, 3 months ago

You can type without looking at the keyboard. That's the point to tests like these. To give you practice typing without looking at your hands so you can get faster. It takes time to develop speed. It feels awkward at first but it gets easier fast.

Just focus on accuracy first. Don't worry about typing fast at all. Just type at a speed your comfortable with. Focus on making no mistakes. Force yourself to see the keyboard in your head while you read what you're typing. Go slow. Give your mind the time it needs to connect the keyboard in your mind that your fingers move to with the individual characters on the screen.

The absolute easiest and most effective way to improve your speed is to find the fastest you can type a 100% accuracy at the steadiest pace you can find. The sound your keys make at this pace should be one steady rhythm of tapping with no gaps, pauses or breaks. Then slow down just enough to feel like your going too slow.

Trust me, you won't FEEL yourself get faster. But, before you know it you'll be burning the keys with your rapidly developing speed.
By amcurtis - posted: 12 years, 2 months ago

My tip to improve your typing speed is get a cover for your keyboard so you can't see the keys. Then looking at the keys for what letter you are pressing wont help, you will have to commit to memory where they are, and wont be tempted to look down.

Overall, I really enjoy this site. The main complaint I have is that the punctuation and grammar with several of the quotes is improper. I've been correcting where I can, as a member; however, I think that the person in charge of proofing/editing quotes needs to be a bit more stringent. I've also sent a message about this. I'm willing to help in whatever way I can. Thanks!

Would you be so kind to give the possibility to the people to register themselves as native speaker or as foreigner. Being a foreigner with modest English knowledge it seems (to me) impossible to compete those who - presumably - know perfectly "ab ovo" the correct english spelling. My typing speed on my mother language cca 300 letters/minute, meanwhile in English presently only 100-130 lpm. And of course I have a Hungarian keyboard, which differs from the English one.
Thanks.

A more structured forum. It is awesome that you have one. But for example, it would be more interactive if the latest threads showed up firs in the list of threads and the feature were you have pretyped text in that "message box" in the profile is just annoying. The forum is confusing.

Whenever I pressed Ctrl+Backspace, The last word I typed are deleted, but in the Box there's always 1 character left which is so wrong.
For example, assume I was typing "The quick vrown" but I realized error( the word "vrown" is in red) then I pressed Ctrl+Backspace to delete the whole word. Despite the word I typed return to "The quick ", the word in the box keeps giving error at the character v( it is displayed "The quick v" with v in red). That makes me need to press another backspace to correct it.

If I'm not mistaken, last year's Ctrl+Backspace feature isn't like this. Knowing that at real typing, just one press of Ctrl+Backspace is enough to delete the whole word we are typing, this keyhero feature(or bug?) isn't convenient for practice. Please change(of fix) this.
Thank you.

Update: it seems whenever Ctrl+Backspace is pressed, the deletion only happen for 1 word only. So if I typed "The quick brown fox" then pressed Ctrl+Backspace 4 times, the result will only affect 1 times and keeps the last word error. The result will be "The quick brown" as in typed word, but giving error "The quick brown f" with f in red.
From that experience, I guess the Ctrl+Backspace feature is bugged.

Edit: this problem seems to happen in Chrome(my version is Chrome 21), but works perfectly with IE

Team games helped me improve speed of my typing. Needing to look at the screen while messages are constantly being sent. I need to keep up with it, and it helped train me type. I learned to not look at my keyboard as I typed, because I wanted to respond to what my friends and teammates were saying before another topic proceeded. Mapestory :)

1. I would like to see a better "error correction" algorithm in training sessions.

Something that counts "mistakes" as edit distance with transpositions, and do not require letters to be in perfect synchronization.

For example, if there is a word 'too' which a type a 'to' and won't notice it for the next five strokes, it should be a single mistake, and not 5 mistakes (because of lost synchronization).

Regaining synchronization "manually" makes it hard to keep rhythm.

2. After completion of exercise, I would like to be able to review and retype words where I made mistakes. For example type each of these words three times.
Bonus points for you, if you exclude proper names and rarely used words (outside of 10.000 most common word list) from this review.
