How do they ever get to type that fast?? I would like to know their secret.

Someone on another typing website types over 200 wpm per test. In addition, my Aunt types close to 170 wpm. I attempted to race her one and failed horribly. :)

I believe it is possible, but it takes lots of practice I guess.

Show the proof.

People who are typing at that level are doing a lot of things that no typing teacher or tutorial will ever teach you.

For example, it is very likely that they are not using the same fingers for the same letters every time, but have learned, by muscle memory, the most efficient fingering combinations, regardless of which fingers are striking which keys.

Do you use QWERTY or Colemak layout?
By teilo - posted: 10 years, 6 months ago

I use the Colemak layout. I switched from Dvorak.

I could type 150/wpm a few years ago.

I graduated from business school with a young lady who could type 200 words a minute so it is definitely possible. She had been typing for over 20 years

Your all useless.
By user53406 - posted: 9 years, 11 months ago

To the person who typed 'your all useless' it's 'you're all useless' I think people who type really fast ( something I can't even imagine I would be happy with a quarter of that speed) must spend many hours at the keyboard knowing it like the back of their hand. When you think about it how often do just copy something out rather than making it up yourself? Thinking about what you want say is just as important as the process of typing.

Their may be some use of java script however.... if this is the reason , shame on him/her ..

My mother used to type 170wpm on the old electric typewriters. I can only imagine how fast she'd be if she had a hold of a keyboard....

Hi im new sort of but im working on my typing im almost to 50 im 48. something i forgot the other part but im going to be 100 i hope pretty soon im on computer everyday and i dont look at the keyboard most of the time .
By vfdavis - posted: 9 years, 9 months ago

I've actually managed to exceed 100 a couple of times the other day. It's amazingly satisfying when you manage it. Though for my day to day uses, I rarely have any wish to go over around 80-90 wpm. I still want to improve my typing despite the fact that there's actually no real point in me doing that anymore.

Keep up your work. :) It is really satisfying to be able to type really fast, in my opinion.

I think being fast comes with a lot of benefits: You get more accurate. This helps eliminate typos as you will start to notice them right when you're making them, you get a feel for when a word has been typed right. It also makes you less lazy when you're writing your own texts... don't like the wording of that one passage? Just rewrite it in a couple of seconds!
By vfdavis - posted: 9 years, 9 months ago

I understand exactly where you're coming from on that, however I tend to think too slowly to keep up with my own typing. Despite the fact I'm not typing that fast after all.

In real world typing the fastest I get is when I'm programming as there is a lot of code that looks like other lines.

Which means for me statements such as "int main( void ) { }" and "for(int i; i < n; i++)" are typed in a very quick and precise manner.

So for me, unless if I'm transcribing something for my boss. I've reached the fastest that I'll benefit from unless if I get in to story writing or something like that. As for writing my own texts, I enjoy typing too much to pass up on rewriting passages to sound better anyway.

You are right. Even in story writing (which I am doing to some extent), the amount of time spent typing is comparably small to the amount spent thinking on what to focus on in your next paragraph.

It's also a matter of price-performance ratio; the amount of time you have to invest in order to get faster rises exponentially the faster you get, so beyond a certain point, there's no sense in it unless you see it as an end in itself.

What came with the biggest payoff to me was to be able to type without thinking about typing. Having strong automatisms for where your fingers need to be in order to type a certain word has improved the control I have over my language immensely. It's like being a learner in driving: if you have to think about clutch, gear, indicator, yadda yadda, you have little resources left to concentrate on the actual traffic surrounding you. Once that's all handled automatically, the whole experience becomes more precise, safe, and enjoyable.
By vfdavis - posted: 9 years, 9 months ago

I can see your point about control over language. Especially when you have to use custom layouts for when you're typing in multiple languages.

Mine has three QWERTY based layouts for different uses.
US-international for general typing. I prefer this type because it uses the normal layout that I'm used to and allows me to type letters that I'd otherwise not be able to.

Romanji (because I generally don't switch to US-international before I need it, and my IME is the default layout anyway) and kana input.

So I see your point about control over language, even though I didn't think about it originally in earlier posts.

I think typing in Japanese is probably the biggest thing that speeding up my typing could help in. Since I can think at roughly double my typing speed in Japanese due to how their words work.

Just Type here everyday for 1 hr and a half everyday for 1 year straight and you can go 200+ I bet you it will work!
By teil0 - posted: 9 years, 8 months ago

I bet you it won't.
By olg_yurkos - posted: 9 years, 8 months ago

Yeah it will, it has a proven credit
By kaikaikaikaikai - posted: 9 years, 8 months ago

Not. Look at one of the world's fastest, Sean Wrona: He started at the age of 3. He was past 80 wpm at the age of 6. Now, 24 years later, he has sustained speeds of around 160 wpm. Do you actually believe 1 hour a day for a year will come even CLOSE to his amount of training?

If you look at some of the most active users on this site like vmlm, prodigy5723 or afbwelter, you'll see that average speeds of 100 - 120 are quite a feat, even for the most dedicated.
By olg_yurkos - posted: 9 years, 7 months ago

Yes, I see what you are saying. But, It really matters what age you are if you are typeing I was talking about Middle school and High school should type at 1 hr and a half it will improve a lot trust me.

What do you have to do to type faster?
By user17190 - posted: 9 years, 7 months ago

I don't want to type like 100 something...I just want to type more than 75 wpm
..plz help
