Typing in Dvorak. Type better and change the inefficient.

Typed in QWERTY for my whole life. Three months of DVORAK and I can type 20% faster from 50wpm(QWERTY) to 60wpm(DVORAK) and make way less mistakes. Also I noticed that it is more comfortable typing for a long time. Far less movement.

If you are not lazy. Commit to it and try it out. I can still type in QWERTY down to 30wpm from never using it. So don't be afraid of losing QWERTY.

Here is pretty much how long it took me in DVORAK

Week 1 = 8wpm
Week 2 = 20wpm
Week 3 = 35wpm
Week 4 = 55wpm
Week 5+ = A tiny increase in speed every week

I suppose depend on the operative system. I got Ubuntu and I do the same as if changing layout for another language

Check out Type Fu as well. It is the Google app I use for typing now.

Where did you get your Dvorak keyboard? Or did you just buy the stickers to put on your existing keyboard?

Im starting learning dvorak, you dont need a diferent keyboard. What I did was to print the layout to have a reference. Anyway, you shouldnt need to see your keyboard to type

So where can I get what the layout is? Is there a particular site that I should go to? I don't know if I'll give up QWERTY, but I would like to try something different.

If I can already type 130 in QWERTY why switch to DVORAK?

I would only ever consider switchen to another keyboard layout if I could work at home. As someone who has to switch between computers often, it's just not practical, although I do see the merit of a DVORAK layout.

I wonder though, do you really touch type? If speed is your concern (as opposed to comfort), you should commit to that.

I had been stuck at about 50 wpm for the past 10 years, too, until I forced myself to re-learn it from scratch, using the proper finger for each key and without looking at the keyboard. After less than 2 weeks I was past 60 wpm and after 4 months average at 80 wpm, my record being 105 wpm.

With the proper technique, you can be fast with any layout.

For anyone wondering this is German for "Bitch, I will cut you while you sleep" I'm being dead serious. translate.google.com

I will remain to use the qwerty keyboard for the same reason that we still use the qwerty: EVERYONE uses qwerty. Only a few typing enthusiasts will go as far as using a keyboard that they will most likely never find anywhere else other than their house. It is just not as common and then when you are somewhere else and you want to use a computer it is just a pain.

Hehe yeah you're right, but the troll used a machine translator, too. Noone would say a thing like that in german, only reverse-translated to English it makes any sense.

I just have the stickers on my keys.

You wouldn't need to.. You type well. But who knows maybe you'd be faster on Dvorak after a few short months.

But for someone starting out or someone like myself who didn't type properly at first. Qwerty is just what they give you. I like Dvorak because it makes better use of your pinkies and the home row. The comfort change was as I mentioned a hugely noticeable change.

In Windows 7 it is as simple as adding a new keyboard in the control panel.

www.dvzine.org

It is explained well on this site.

That is very true. I started touch typing when I started learning Dvorak
By lazyeinstein - posted: 11 years, 5 months ago

It takes two seconds to put the Dvorak key layout on.

The hardware will still be Qwerty but the software is changed to Dvorak. You shouldn't be looking at the keys when you type anyways.

My University added the quick link for Dvorak on the library computers for me by me simply requesting. It is that easy to turn on.

I use a typematrix keyboard and you can choose any skin you want.
like: qwerty , azerty . Dvorak US , Dvorak bépo and many others…
And you can switch qwerty / Dvorak pressing a simple key.

It's a small keyboard and i can take it with me everywhere. Just one little problem, the price… but quality have no price isn't il?
