Typing speed and accuracy correlation

Someone asked: can you provide a plot of correlation between typing speed and accuracy? The hypothesis is, that high accuracy is crucial to high speed, but do data confirm or disprove it?

Here are the numbers that show the average accuracy for different WPM. This is based on the last 100,000 games played on the site.

WPM > 0 and WPM < 30. Accuracy: 92%
WPM > 30 and WPM < 40. Accuracy: 94%
WPM > 40 and WPM < 50. Accuracy: 94.7%
WPM > 50 and WPM < 60. Accuracy: 95.2%
WPM > 60 and WPM < 70. Accuracy: 95.3%
WPM > 70 and WPM < 80. Accuracy: 96%
WPM > 80 and WPM < 90. Accuracy: 96.2%
WPM > 90 and WPM < 100. Accuracy: 96.3%
WPM > 100 and WPM < 110. Accuracy: 97%
WPM > 110 and WPM < 120. Accuracy: 97.9%
WPM > 120 and WPM < 130. Accuracy: 98.7%
WPM > 130 and WPM < 140. Accuracy: 99.2%
WPM > 140 and WPM < 150. Accuracy: 99.7%
WPM > 150 and WPM < 160. Accuracy: 99.4%
WPM > 160 Accuracy: 99.8%
It's important to be accurate but if you focus too much on being accurate, it can make you tentative and take away the aggressiveness you need to become a fast typist. I'm probably more tentative than I should be. It all boils down to being comfortable and having confidence to excel at any typing challenge that comes your way.

Thanks for the data Marc, very interesting!

Very cool. I usually think of having a tradeoff of speed vs. accuracy, but it makes sense that the only way to type faster is to type more accurately.
