WPM

By lemontwist - updated: 9 years, 11 months ago - 7 messages

Hi, I've tried looking for the information on the site but can't find it.
How does this site calculate the wpm, for instance, if I make errors are they taken into account when the calculation is made?
Or, is the actual speed shown exclusive of errors?
Thanks;)
Yak now? I was wondering this. This is the best explanation yet! Thanks.

The actual speed includes the errors. I know not about how they really get the WPM but the calculation does include the accuracy and speed of typing, and if you know how to touch-type and are quite accurate at it then your WPM might rank up to 80-100 WPM (if you're fortunate and experienced enough). I hope I helped answer your question. :)

No. Sorry, but no. WPM is correlated to accuracy only because if you are more accurate then you will make less mistakes so therefore if you are more accurate then you will type more quickly. When you make a mistake you are forced to look down at either your hands or text you are creating instead of the text that you copying. This creates a significant delay that will slow you down.

The speed does not factor in the errors, the speed is determined solely by how quickly you type the quote. But the site will stop you if you make a mistake, so in a sense the accuracy affects your WPM but not in the way that I think that you mean.

Normally to determine net words a minute:

Total words (5 characters = 1 word), divided by number of minutes of the timing, minus 2 for each error = nwpm

But this website forces you to correct your mistakes when you make them so the subtraction of speed when you make a mistake is not in the "calculation" of your WPM.

BASICALLY: the actual speed shown is exclusive of errors, if you mean what I believe you mean when you say that.

Tell me if you did not understand something I have said and I will do my best to clarify it. I hope that I have helped. :)

@school_rocks75 & afbwelter

I've only recently begun touch typing, so I make many, many errors.
I just wasn't sure if they were taken into account or not whilst typing quotes.
I only wish I could type as fast either of you, but I am practicing everyday and it's getting better, but sooo slowwwly.;) My fingers tend to get a little too excited and start pressing random keys when I get ahead of myself. hehe.

Thank you both for your answers, and explanations.

To determine net words a minute: Total words (5 characters = 1 word), divided by number of minutes of the timing, minus 2 for each error = nwpm So, if you typed 75 words in 3 minutes with 2 errors on the timing, you would calculate net words per minute as follows: 75 words, divided by 3 (number of minutes) = 25 gwpm (gross words per minute) minus 4 (2 errors) = 21 nwpm - (net words per minute)

Took this from this site hope it helps
WPM means Words Per Minute. It is a measure of the output speed on a
keyboard. Here's how it works:
- start a timer and start typing for exactly 1 minute
- count how many characters you just typed including spaces and
punctuation
- divide that value by 5 (the WPM system considers a word is 5 keystrokes)
- the result is your Words Per Minute speed

For example, if I've typed the text "Hello world. It is a nice day." and it
took me 1 minute to enter that text. Here's how I get my WPM speed:
- "Hello world. It is a nice day." has 30 characters
- in terms of WPM words that's 30 / 5 = 6 words (because with WPM a
word is 5 keystrokes)
- so my speed is 6 WPM

If it took me 30 seconds to type that text, then my speed would be:
6 * 60 / 30 = 12 WPM

The average professional typists reach a speed of 50 to 70 WPM. Are
you a professional typist? Do the free typing test :) http://www.keyhero.… />
