In different cultures what's "manly" and "feminine" varies greatly. The gender roles people speak of are highly subjective and vary within cultures all across the world. There is no "acting like a girl" or "acting like a boy" because the expectations differ greatly according to different cultures. People should act like people, like the human beings they are. Humans show affection, they cry, they experience emotion and pain... All that is just a part of being human, a part of being a person.

There is nothing you could have done. There will always be people who will say mean words because you are different and sometimes their minds cannot be changed. But there are many more people who do not judge others based on how they look or where they are from. Those are the people whose words truly matter.
