What really helped me improve my typing speed is when I started instant messaging with friends online as a teenager. I had to get my thoughts onto the screen fast enough to make sense to my conversation. Also, learning not to look at the keyboard at all. If I look at the keyboard instead of at the words I want to type or am typing, I will have to go back after I'm finished and spend a lot of time to correct and edit what I typed.
