This sounds petty, but it's actually really good safety advice as well. You don't risk slamming the door on your or their fingers, or accidentally catching your clothing on the door so that they drive away in a huff and drag you along.
Debatable but mostly plausible in my opinion, I would imagine that there are people who definitely suffer from it, however, in the whole mess of things I could see what you said happening for a lot of people
