Das Brandenburger Tor, im Krieg schwer angeschlagen, war von den Besatzungsbehörden geflickt und notdürftig repariert worden. Direkt auf der Grenze zwischen den Westsektoren und dem Ostsektor der Stadt (später zwischen beiden deutschen Staaten) gelegen, war das Tor eine der offiziellen Passierstellen. Wie bereits im 18. Jahrhundert, wurde es damit wieder zum Eingang nach Berlin und aufgrund dieser bedeutsamen symbolischen Lage auch zum bevorzugten Ort für Demonstrationen.
