The breed arose as the result of crossings between water spaniels, various sorts of retrievers and, possibly, pointers. The tight, curly coat was probably enhanced by adding poodle stock to the breeding programme. The breed reached the peak of its popularity in the latter half of the 19th century, when many were taken to Australia and New Zealand to be used for hunting birds. The unique coat is well adapted for work in the water and soon dries.
