- Contract Bridge, RED BOOK
To a superficial mind a deck of cards is simply fifty-two pasteboards forming a jumbled mass of painted figures and numbers appearing in a chaotic succession and disorder. At first glance fickle Hazard seems to dominate all and so pernicious has been the lure of Chance on ignorant minds that in older days many church people thundered against the "devil's ticket".

- Our sons (shortened version)
Many years ago there lived a poor old widow. This poor old widow had two sons. The first born entered service on a ship that headed for the Pacific, but nobody knows what became of him because the ship disappeared without a trace. The younger boy stayed home. Once when his poor old mother sent him for some medicine to the nearby pharmacy, he never returned. He, too, disappeared without a trace. The poor lady was sorry not to have a third son, to become a folk-tale hero.

- Meat loaf
Combine the ground meat with a whole egg, a roll soaked in milk, season with a dash of salt and black pepper, shape into small loafs, and fry in hot lard or oil. Note: For us mammals, it is not inconsequential whether we grind the meat, or we end up in the grinder ourselves.
