I see a lot of advice about accuracy and good posture being the most important things for typing fast. But for me, the most important first steps are having short fingernails and warm hands.

I just cut my fingernails not a minute ago! I completely agree. Short fingernails are great for typing fast.

My typing gets better the warmer my hands are.

Fingernails part is true. When mine get even slightly too long it starts screwing with me and makes typing feel much worse.

Warm hands are absolutely essential.

Definitely! Cold hands relate to stiff muscles, which is why I can't type well in the mornings. Or in the winter times, really.
