| When the air cools, causing the moisture it contains to condense into water droplets, clouds are formed. Air forced to rise into a region of lower pressure expands and cools. This happens in a low pressure system where there is general upward movement of air, cool as it rises and forming clouds if enough moisture is present. When warm moist air strikes an obstruction such as a range of hills or another air stream moving in the opposite direction, resulting turbulence causes air to rise and clouds may form. Similarly, moist air striking a mountain is forced upwards and clouds may form above the mountain or even on its slopes if cooling is rapid enough. Fog is a type of cloud, generally forming on clear nights when the ground, lacking insulation from overhead cloud, rapidly loses any stored heat. Air in contact with it also cools quickly and condensation may therefore occur. On a still night, water vapour condenses on the ground to form dew or frost whereas, with even a slight breeze blowing, the vapour is stirred up and low-lying fog results. Clouds can be divided in to three major groups depending on whether they are formed at a high, medium or low level. Stratus is a low-level cloud. Grey and uniform, it gives the sky a leaden look. The familiar puffy cumulus with its flat base is also classed as a low-level cloud. It is generally brilliant white, though light grey sometimes appears. Alto-stratus, a sheet-like cloud, occurs at middle levels. Cirrus, fine and white, forms at higher levels, stretching out in thin streaks across the sky. |
