Las bayaderas hacen su aparición, entre ellas Nikiya, que ha sido elegida para alcanzar el rango de Gran Bayadera. El Gran Brahmán, fascinado por su belleza, le declara su amor; pero ésta le rechaza al ser él un hombre de Dios. Las ceremonias comienzan y las bailarinas llevan agua a los fakires. Magdaveya comunica a Nikiya los deseos de Solor. La joven consiente, pero el Gran Brahmán advierte esa conversación y comienza a sospechar que la joven guarda algún secreto.
La ceremonia finaliza y los asistentes retornan al templo. Magdaveya aconseja a Solor que se oculte en el bosque para esperar a Nikiya. Cuando ésta llega, ambos jóvenes se juran amor eterno ante la Llama Sagrada. Sin ser visto, el Gran Brahmán observa desde el interior del templo y espía a los amantes. Cuando ellos se separan, el Gran Brahmán, furioso, invoca a los dioses para que Solor sea destruido.
Acto I. Escena II. Una sala del palacio
Los guerreros son invitados a palacio para rendir homenaje a Solor. El Rajah anuncia que, en recompensa por el valor del joven, le entregará a éste la mano de su hija Gamzatti en matrimonio. Al serle presentada, Gamzatti se retira el velo y Solor queda deslumbrado ante su belleza. A pesar de estar unido a Nikiya por un juramento, el joven no puede resistirse a su encanto ni rechazar el ofrecimiento del Rajah. La fiesta comienza con la llegada del Gran Brahmán que revela al Rajah los lazos que existen entre Solor y la bayadera.
El Brahmán supone que el Rajah eliminará a Solor. Sin embargo, para su sorpresa, el propósito del gobernante es dar muerte a Nikiya. Gamzatti, escondida, escucha toda la conversación. Decide entonces, encontrarse con Nikiya y trata de persuadirle para que abandone a Solor. La bayadera, desesperada, intenta herir a Gamzatti, pero es detenida por Aya, una sirvienta. Nikiya huye y Gamzatti, al igual que su padre, decreta la muerte de la bayadera.
Acto I. Escena III. El jardín del palacio
Se anuncia un gran festín para celebrar el compromiso entre Gamzatti y Solor. El Gran Brahmán impulsa a Nikiya a bailar en la ceremonia, pero ella rehúsa. La sirvienta de Gamzatti, Aya, le entrega una cesta con flores, diciéndole que es un presente de Solor. Pero entre las flores se oculta una mortal serpiente, enviada por Gamzatti y el Rajah. El áspid muerde a Nikiya, cuando ésta se dispone a oler la fragancia de las flores. El Gran Brahmán le ofrece un antídoto, pero cuando ella ve a Gamzatti y a Solor juntos rechaza la cura.
Acto II. La tienda de Solor
Desesperado por la muerte de la hermosa bayadera, y bajo la influencia del opio, Solor ve a Nikiya en el Reino de las sombras, muerta y multiplicada su imagen por espectros de bayaderas. Junto a ella, Solor evoca su danza ante la Llama Sagrada. El guerrero continúa atrapado por la fascinante visión de Nikiya cuando hacen su aparición sus compañeros para prepararle para la boda.
Acto III. El Templo
Bajo la sombra del Gran Buda, un ídolo de bronce danza mientras el Gran Brahmán y los sacerdotes preparan la ceremonia nupcial. Los novios hacen su entrada rodeados de bayaderas, que ejecutan una danza ritual: símbolo de la Llama Sagrada que brilla ante el templo. El Rajah, Gamzatti y Solor bailan, pero el guerrero es continuamente asaltado por la visión de Nikiya.
Durante las danzas aparece misteriosamente un cesto con flores, idéntico al que provocó la muerte de la bayadera; Gamzatti, aterrada y atormentada por la culpabilidad, solicita a su padre que apresure la ceremonia.
El Gran Brahmán pronuncia los ritos sagrados, en medio de la indecisión de Solor. Los dioses, furiosos, desencadenan su venganza: el templo y todos los presentes son destruidos. Las almas de Nikiya y Solor se unen, finalmente, en un amor eterno. Fuente Teatre Liceu.
